Can You Get California Auto Insurance on a Car Bought in California With an Out of State Drivers License?

by California Car Insurance on April 2, 2011

i will be buying a used certified car in california and was wondering if i could get auto insurance in california with an out of state drivers license (georgia). If so, what are implications? I was wondering also if I would be able to register that car with an out of state drivers license

If you buy a car from a dealer, he may want the license to verify who you are, but as an agent of the dmv, the dealer will fill out the paper work, and mail it to what ever address you give him (it may be an extra 100 bucks, but you avoid the dmv this way too.) It depends on which insurance company you call, I had one that wanted me to change the license, so I hung up and called another insurance company that did not care, and used the license I had, but often times the insurance company can fax the insurance card quickly to the dealer fax if you pay the insurance with a credit or debit card.
If the dmv lets you register your car with an out of state license (which I doubt) it will have your address on the license, which is where the title and registration and tags will go( back to georgia). In california the AAA membership lets you register cars from california, and you can pay fees for registration, at any AAA office I believe ( you need to check on this, its been five years since and they may not do it anymore) I did this for years with an out of state license, I gave the dealer a california address, and went to triple AAA to pay registration fees so if you have a triple aaa tow service, you should be able to register a calif car with an out of state license, good luck

A drivers license is not required for buying insurance. A drivers license is only required for driving.
